About TED and TEDx
A quick primer on the global stage TEDxPICT borrows its format from — and how our license fits into it.
- What is TED?
- TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks of 18 minutes or less. TED began in 1984 as a conference on Technology, Entertainment, and Design, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages.
- What is TEDx?
- In the spirit of TED's mission of 'ideas worth spreading,' TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
- How is a TEDx event different from TED itself?
- TED provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized by license holders such as ours. That means the curation, speaker outreach, and production are entirely community-led — while still following the format, quality standards, and guidelines that carry the TEDx name.
- Who can hold a TEDx event?
- Any individual or group can apply for a free license to host a TEDx event in their own community, provided they meet TED's organizer and content guidelines. Licenses are event-specific and must be renewed for each edition.

Through the Audacious Project, TED has helped catalyze $6.6 billion in funding for projects that support bold solutions to the world's most urgent challenges — working to make the world more beautiful, sustainable and just. In 2020, TED launched Countdown, an initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis and mobilize a movement for a net-zero future, and in 2023 TED launched TED Democracy to spark a new kind of conversation focused on realistic pathways towards a more vibrant and equitable future.
Our standing
TEDxPICT, under license
TEDxPICT is organized independently by students of Pune Institute of Computer Technology under a license from TED. We are responsible for our own curation, production, and speaker selection, and we operate within TED's content and brand guidelines for every edition we host. TED or TEDx is not affiliated with, and does not produce or control the content of, this event beyond the terms of that license.
